Management of Malnutrition

What is malnutrition?
According to World Health Organization, malnutrition is defined as “deficiencies, excesses or imbalances in a person’s intake of energy and/or nutrients.” Malnutrition can occur due to diet, environment, and a host of other conditions.

Types of malnutrition
Malnutrition can be a result of a lack of macronutrients or micronutrients. However, some of the most serious forms are seen in children less than five years of age.
There are two serious types of malnutrition among children: severe acute malnutrition and moderate acute malnutrition.
Severe acute malnutrition also known as SAM is the most extreme condition of malnutrition. Children experiencing severe acute malnutrition require urgent nutrition in order to survive. They have very low weight and have severe muscle wasting. Moderate acute malnutrition also known as MAM is also very serious but is less urgently life threatening. Children with MAM also experience very low weight and muscle wasting.

What are the right foods for malnutrition?
Children experiencing SAM and MAM malnutrition must be given a special diet. Their bodies are often unable to absorb the nutrients in normal food. Specialized malnutrition food and nutrition must be provided for them.
Generally, these children require high-energy milk and other ready-to-use therapeutic food such as F75 and F100. These foods are specially formulated to give children experiencing malnutrition the essential food and micronutrients they need to recover.

What is the right management of severe acute malnutrition?
Severe acute malnutrition treatment usually starts with community health workers who can correctly identify SAM-affected children. These health workers then must assess the children for certain health risks and infections before beginning treatment with F75 and progressively increase to F100. The treatment of severe acute malnutrition should be managed by a team that includes the dietitian, physicians, and malnutrition food suppliers.(ie The Ready-To-Use Therapeutic Food)
